About ....

I am a registered Clinical Neuropsychologist and Clinical Psychologist, with my MA in Neuropsychology from Wits University, and registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and accredited Full member of the South African Clinical Neuropsychological Association.  After almost 20 years of corporate experience in the fragrance and flavour industries, I entered the field of Psychology in 2009, thus beginning my ongoing journey into the field of Neuropsychology - and inspired by the depth of work happening in this area and how it has infilitrated our lives completely.

Since 2015, I have been working with and assessing people across the age spectrum using clinical and standardised neuropsychological assessment tools.  A significant portion of assessments I do are conducted with adults afflicted with neurocognitive, neurodegenerative and or head-injuries.

I tend to focus on neuropsychological assessments following head injury, cerebrovascular attacks or other neurological incidents – and for medico-legal purposes. Capacity and risk (health and safety) are important outcomes from such assessments.  These assessments are also used in Insurance or for curatorship purposes as well as in accident claims

In addition to the evaluation of emotional & neurocognitive functioning  or the option of collaborative therapeutic neuropsychological assessments, I also provide psychoeducation, individual  support to aid management and psychotherapy (with an integrative orientation).  Where possible I work in a multi-disciplinary environment to provide a client-centred approach to clinical interventions.

Neuropsychology is that branch of psychology that investigates changes in brain and psychological functioning after any form of brain injury and/or illness.  Its main focus are the changes that occur in thinking, emotions and behaviour.

Practitioners of neuropsychology typically conduct a detailed assessment of abilities in which a pattern of relative strengths and weaknesses are obtained. These results are used to better aid diagnoses as well as make recommendations for management and/or treatment. Recommendations for treatment such as cognitive rehabilitation, behaviour management or psychotherapy may also be provided.

Assessments on children from the ages of 7 years and older, adolescents, adults and seniors are offered. The evaluation incorporates a detailed interview with the individual with additional collateral interviews where needed; a review of past medical history as well as an individually designed assessment battery with feedback either to the client or referring practitioner.

Most South African medical aids will cover the face to face time for assessments required for clinical purposes.  Under the current system, the medical aids work on a sliding scale.  At least a portion of the face to face time is generally covered, however, they do not cover collateral interviews, scoring, interpretations and the report, which can take between 2 – 3 hours of additional time post-assessment.

Note that assessments required for medico-legal, insurance, vocational and/or curatorship purposes must be settled by the requesting party and are not covered by the medical aids.

Will it be covered by my medical aid?
